What If I Don't Accept a Basic Pokmonday Menu in My Paw?

Then show your manus to your opponent, shuffle it back into your deck, and draw 7 new cards. Your opponent can then choose to draw upwardly to ii extra cards. If you nevertheless don't have whatever Basic Pokmon in your new hand, you lot echo this process, but your opponent gets to draw up to ii extra cards each time!

You and your opponent each choose a Basic Pokmon card (it'll say "Basic Pokmonday" in the upper left-mitt corner) from your hands and put them face-downwards. These will be your starting Active Pokmonday.

Flip over all the Agile and Benched Pokmonday that have been put on the table.

Let's Play!

As you lot play, yous and your opponent take turns. During your opponent's turn, yous don't do anything except replace your Active Pokmon if it gets Knocked Out (see below). During your turn, become through the steps below.

Tabular array of Contents

What Can Y'all Exercise during Your Turn?

You can do lots of things during your plough! You always depict a menu offset, and you always assault final. Here's everything you can do:

  1. DRAW a carte
  2. Practice Whatever of the following in any order and as oft every bit you like:
    • Put a Basic Pokmonday on the Bench
    • Evolve a Pokmon in play
    • Adhere an Energy card to a Pokmon (only once per plough)
    • Play a Trainer menu
    • Retreat your Agile Pokmon
    • Use a Pokmon Ability
  3. ATTACK with your Active Pokmon
  4. Your plough is OVER now

one) DRAW a card

You lot always begin your plow by cartoon a card. (If your deck is empty at the showtime of your turn, the game is over, and your opponent wins.)

2) Exercise Whatsoever of the following in any order and every bit oft as you like:

Put a Basic Pokmon on the Bench

Choose a Bones Pokmon from your hand and put information technology face-up on your Bench. You can have no more than v Pokmon on your Bench at any fourth dimension, and then you can only put a new Bones Pokmon there simply if your Demote has 4 or fewer Pokmon on it.

Evolve a Pokmon in play

If you accept a card in your mitt that says "Evolves from and so-and-then" and and so-and-and then is the name of a Pokmon you already have in play, yous may play that card in your paw on top of the Pokmon so-and-so. This is called "evolving" a Pokmon.

Example: Juliane has a carte called Ninetales that says "Evolves from Vulpix," and she has a Vulpix card in play. She may play the Ninetales card on superlative of the Vulpix menu.

When a Pokmonday evolves, it keeps all cards attached to it (Energy cards, Evolution cards, etc.) and whatsoever harm it might already take, only the onetime attacks and Pokmonday Powers of the Pokmon information technology evolved from get away. All other things almost the Pokmonday go away-Sleep, Confusion, Paralysis, Poisonous substance, or anything else that might exist the result of an assail some Pokmonday made earlier.

Sorry, you can't evolve a Pokmonday that you just played or evolved on that turn. Also, neither thespian can evolve a Pokmonday on the first turn. And finally, yes, you can evolve a Pokmonday on your Bench-that counts equally "in play"!

Attach an Energy card to a Pokmon

Take an Energy menu from your hand and adhere it to ane of your Pokmon in play (put it under the Pokmon card).

Unlike most of the other things y'all can do during your turn, yous may practice this only one time during your turn. Too, think that yous can adhere an Energy menu to a Pokmon on your Bench. After all, that's "in play," too!

Play a Trainer card

When y'all want to play a Trainer card, do what it says, then put it in the discard pile.

Retreat your Active Pokmonday

Y'all may switch your Active Pokmon with one of the Pokmon on your Bench. To do this, y'all must discard Free energy attached to the Active Pokmonday equal to the Retreat Cost that'southward written in the lower correct-manus corner. (You'll read more most costs in the "Set on with Your Active Pokmonday" section.) If you tin't do that, so you can't retreat. Pokmonday with no Retreat Toll don't demand to get rid of whatever Free energy when they retreat-they tin retreat "for free."

A Pokmon that is Asleep or Paralyzed tin can't retreat. A Confused Pokmon can endeavour to retreat, just information technology might not succeed. (Why this might happen will be explained later on in the rules.)

When your Agile Pokmonday goes to your Bench (whether it retreated or got in that location some other way), it keeps any Free energy cards, any Evolution cards, and any damage counters it might already accept. All other things near the Pokmon become away-Slumber, Defoliation, Paralysis, Poison, or anything else that might be the consequence of an attack some Pokmon made earlier. All of these things go away.

If you retreat, you lot tin can all the same attack that turn with the new Agile Pokmon.

Employ a Pokmonday Power

Some Pokmon have a special "Pokmon Power" that they can use when they're in play. (Remember, Benched Pokmon are "in play," too.) Many of these Powers tin can be used before you attack. Each Pokmon Power is different, though, so you should read carefully to see how each Power works.

A Pokmon Power isn't the same as a Pokmon's assail, so if y'all use the Pokmon Power, you lot tin can still attack!

3) Set on with your Active Pokmon

If you wish, yous may have your Active Pokmon attack your opponent'due south Active Pokmonday (besides called the "Defending Pokmon"). This is the last thing you can do during your turn-you tin't do anything else later on. You lot tin only attack one fourth dimension during your turn, and your Pokmonday can only use one of its attacks each plow. To assail, just tell your opponent which i of your Pokmonday'southward attacks y'all're using. You can only utilise an attack if you take at least the required amount of Energy attached to your Active Pokmon.

The required amount is written to the left of the attack name.

Energy

Whatsoever kind of Energy-Grass, Fire, Water, Lightning, Psychic, Fighting, or Colorless-can count toward Colorless Free energy requirements (Colorless). But simply Energy of the appropriate kind counts toward Energy requirements of that kind. For example, y'all can utilize at set on with Fire Fire Colorless next to it only if that Pokmon has at least 3 Energy attached to it, at least ii of which are Fire Energy.

You take to have the required amount of Energy attached to a Pokmon to use its assault, just y'all don't have to discard those cards to set on. The cards stay attached to your Pokmonday unless the menu says otherwise!

Impairment

When you assault, read the attack you're using and do what it says. For each 10 damage a Pokmon takes, put one damage counter on information technology. If a Pokmon ever has total damage at least equal to its Hitting Points (for example, 4 or more damage counters on a Pokmonday with 40 HP), it's immediately Knocked Out.

Weakness and Resistance

Some Pokmon have a Weakness or Resistance to Pokmon of sure other types. (For example, Charmander has a Weakness to Water Pokmonday.) A Defending Pokmonday takes double damage from a Pokmon that it has a Weakness to, and information technology takes 30 less harm from a Pokmon that it has Resistance to.

Usually the assault won't depend on the order you do this in, just if it does, and so this is how you lot'll figure it out! First, you lot pay any costs (discarding Energy cards, for case) earlier seeing what the attack does. And so damage comes before whatever other effects. Also, Weakness is applied before other things that might alter the amount of harm.

What happens when your Pokmon is Knocked Out?

Whenever one of your Pokmon is Knocked Out, put its Basic Pokmon card and all cards fastened to it (Evolution cards, Energy cards, etc.) in your discard pile. Your opponent then chooses i of his or her Prizes (even if you Knocked Out your Pokmonday yourself!) and puts it into his or her hand. After that, you must supercede your Active Pokmon with a Pokmonday from your Demote. (If you lot can't do this because your Demote is empty, you lose.) If your Active Pokmon and your opponent's Active Pokmon are Knocked Out at the same time, the role player whose turn it is replaces his or her Pokmon concluding. The player whose plow information technology is chooses his or her Prize last equally well.

4) Your turn is OVER now

Sometimes there are things to do after your plow is over but before your opponent's plough begins. After you've done those things, your opponent'southward turn begins.

What Happens after Each Player'south Turn?

Afterward each player's turn, if either thespian'due south Active Pokmon is Poisoned, it'll accept damage, and if it's Asleep or Paralyzed it might recover. And so the next histrion's turn begins.

Table of Contents

How Exercise Slumber, Defoliation, Paralysis, and Poison Work?

Some attacks cause the Defending Pokmon to be Comatose, Confused, Paralyzed, or Poisoned. These things don't happen to a Benched Pokmon, only to an Active Pokmon-in fact, if a Pokmon goes to the Demote, these things are removed from it. And evolving a Pokmonday also means information technology's no longer Asleep, Confused, Paralyzed, or Poisoned.

Asleep

If a Pokmon is Comatose, it tin can't attack or retreat. Every bit soon as a Pokmon is Asleep, turn information technology sideways to bear witness that it's Comatose. After each histrion's plough, flip a coin. On a heads, the Pokmon wakes up (turn the menu back correct-side upwardly), but on a tails it's nonetheless Asleep, and you'll take to wait until subsequently the next turn to try to wake it up again.

Confused

If a Pokmonday is Confused, you have to flip a coin whenever y'all try to attack with it or whenever you lot endeavor to make it retreat. Turn a Confused Pokmon with its head pointed toward you to show information technology's Confused.

When you endeavor to make a Confused Pokmon retreat, you first have to pay the Retreat Price by discarding Free energy cards. Then flip a coin. On heads, you lot retreat the Pokmon as normal. On tails, the retreat fails, and that Pokmon can't attempt to retreat again that plow.

When you lot attack with a Dislocated Pokmonday, you flip a coin. On heads, the set on works normally, simply on tails your Pokmon attacks itself with an attack that does 20 damage. (If your Pokmon has a Weakness or Resistance to its own blazon, or if there's some other result that would alter the assail, apply these things as usual.)

On tails, the Active Pokmon does 20 damage to itself even if its attack normally doesn't do damage (like Squirtle's Withdraw attack).

Paralyzed

If a Pokmon is Paralyzed, it tin can't attack or retreat. Turn the Pokmon sideways to show it's Paralyzed. If an Active Pokmon is Paralyzed, it recovers after its player's next turn. Turn the bill of fare right-side up again.

What this means is that if your Pokmon gets Paralyzed, information technology volition be out of action on your side by side turn, and and so it will be okay again.

Card Positions

Poisoned

If a Pokmon is Poisoned, place a "poison marker" on information technology to show that it's Poisoned.

Equally long equally information technology'due south still Poisoned, the Pokmon takes x damage subsequently each player's plough, ignoring Weakness and Resistance. If an assail would Poison a Pokmon that's already Poisoned, information technology doesn't become doubly Poisoned; instead, the new Poison condition replaces the old one.

Brand sure whatever you lot utilise for a poison marker looks different from a harm counter.

Tabular array of Contents

Can Your Pokmon Be Asleep and Confused at the Same Time?

If a Pokmon is Asleep, Confused, or Paralyzed, and a new attack is made confronting information technology that causes it to become Asleep, Confused, or Paralyzed, the old status is erased and just the new one counts. Merely these three weather are the only assail furnishings that erase each other. For example, a Pokmon can be confused and Poisoned at the same fourth dimension.

End READING NOW! You know enough to start playing, and so play a few games earlier yous get on to the Expert Rules!

Why Are There So Many Different Cards?

One of the things that makes Pokmon different from other card games is that it's a trading card game. This means that in that location are lots of different cards that you can collect and trade with your friends. A lot of the fun of a trading carte game comes from making different decks that use different strategies.

Table of Contents

How Practice You lot Make a New Deck?

Your deck has to have exactly sixty cards, and you tin't have more than iv of whatever one carte du jour other than basic Free energy cards in your deck (the basic Free energy cards are Grass, Fire, Water, Lightning, Psychic, and Fighting). A card counts as the same as another bill of fare if it has the same proper name-it doesn't matter whether the cards have different art or come up from different sets.

To brand a new deck, first notice that all the cards other than the Trainers have dissimilar Energy types on them. Your deck should probably include one or two of the basic Energy types, and you tin can cull to add some Colorless (Colorless) Pokmonday if you like. If you only choose ane Energy type, you volition always have the right kind of Energy for your Pokmon, but not as much diverseness. If y'all take several Energy types, y'all'll accept more Pokmon to choose from, merely yous'll run the take chances of sometimes non drawing the correct type of Energy for your Pokmon. And exist certain your deck has plenty Free energy cards (nearly decks need 25 to 30).

One time you've chosen your Energy types, pick Pokmon and Trainer cards that work well together. Practice you want to build up large Pokmonday to crush your opponent? Then put in a lot of Evolution cards and some Trainers similar Pokdex that assistance you find those Development cards. Do y'all want to exercise a lot of impairment to your opponent's Pokmon very rapidly? So option Pokmon that don't need to be evolved and cards like PlusPower that practise extra harm.

Afterwards you lot've fabricated your deck, play it as ofttimes as you can against as many other decks as you can. See what works and what doesn't, and then make changes.
